Incoming macbook pro
I will soon have in my possession a shiny 13.3″ macbook pro with 2.52 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, and 250 GB disk space. Since I’m now a student at Wake Tech, I qualify for both $100 off and half-off Applecare discount, as well as the free 8GB iPod Touch. Isn’t college grand?
My main reason for purchasing the laptop is an insight I came across yesterday: in order to further reduce my computing burden, I need to compute with much lower power consumption. The solution is to use the power hog (the mac pro) far less and use a laptop for most of my non-intensive work.
It’s portable, it re-charges with a minimum of watt-hours, and it helps me meet my original goal when I set out to reduce my energy consumption on the desktop. If I take any classes on campus, I can bring it along with me as well. Bonus.
I’m planning on selling the iPod though. Total cost with tax was around $1930 with the edu discount and iPod. The rebate is up to $230, knocking the bill back down to $1700. Selling the iPod would bring it down to perhaps $1500, and the non-edu price for the same model with 2 year apple care plus tax is $1870. $370 off what I would have paid seems like a steal.

Very nice. My sister in-law just bought the new 2.26 macbook pro. The first thing I noticed was how crisp and vivid the LED display was. Compared to my 2007 macbook the difference was significant. Also, the glossy display was fine with me. I want to hear your thoughts of the display after you have played with it.

I’m sure I’ll be fine with the glossy screen. My Samsung TV is glossy and it seems to make reflections much less diffuse, and blacks blacker. The iPod and Applecare boxes come Wednesday, so I have to sign for that. Laptop didn’t ship tonight, sure they’re backed up a little.
